About Williamson County Texas
Williamson County Texas (also known as Wilco) is home to more than 420,000 residents spread out among more than 30 communities on the Balcones Escarpment north of Austin. The escarpment spans more than 1,100 square miles and cuts the county in two along a line from Jarrell to Georgetown to Round Rock. The western side is considered part of the Western Plains, while the eastern side is part of the Coastal Plains topography. In the early days, this region was valued for its rich farmland on one side and varied mineral resources (dilomite, limestone, gravel, oil and gas) on the other. Today, however, Williamson County’s most valuable resource is its residential properties with easy access to Austin. The area has always been ethnically diverse, welcoming settlers from Czech countries, Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Spain, and eventually desegregation encouraged growth in the black population as well. Suburbanization led to a population boom beginning in the late 1970s and continuing today, wherever land is available. Austin’s city limits cross over into Williamson County, but the Wilco community as a whole maintains economic independence from the state capital, attracting its own industrial and retail developments.
