About Leander Texas
Established in 1882, Leander Texas was originally named Bagdad. The first settlers came to the area just north of Austin much earlier than that, but frequent attacks by the local American Indian tribes made it difficult to stay. Texas Rangers were called in to protect the settlers, constructing a building that would house up to 60 men. Bagdad was isolated, but offered abundant water and timber. When the railroad came through, local residents objected to the disturbance of their sleepy farming village. Soon, however, Bagdad settlers realized the benefit of the railroad and they moved most of their homes and businesses one mile farther west to be near the depot, renaming the town after Leander “Catfish” Brown (one of the men responsible for completing the rail line). Although the population of Leander was just 300 in 1969, the town was ideally located to capitalize on development efforts under way for the Greater Austin area. Today, Leander is home to more than 30,000 residents, the largest school district in Williamson County, a commuter rail system to Austin, a challenging golf course, and a variety of recreational opportunities.
