About Hutto Texas
Hutto Texas is part of the burgeoning Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area of Williamson County. It has grown from a small town of barely 1,000 in 2000 to more than 11,000 residents today. Aggressive development along Highway 130 (soon to be an alternate to Interstate 35) keeps the economy booming here as Austin suburbanites seek homes farther north and east of Austin. The town of Hutto was named for local land owner James Emory Hutto who sold a plot of land for a town site and railroad right of way in 1876. Early settlers were predominantly Swedish and German immigrant farmers. Hutto High School adopted the hippo as their school mascot after a humorous incident with a hippopotamus escaping from a circus train to take a dip in the nearby Cottonwood Creek.
