About Buda Texas
Part of the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metropolitan statistical area, Buda Texas is conveniently located 13 miles southwest of Austin and just 60 miles northeast of San Antonio. The original name Du Pre reportedly has several possible meanings. First, the French phrase “of the meadow” fits the area topography; but the name also may have come from a local postmaster’s pleas to the railroad “do, pray, give us a depot” or from the Austin newspaper editor who helped bring a train depot to the area. Later, the name was changed to Buda, as a nod to exiles from Hungary who settled here. A notorious bank robbery occurred here when a 22-year-old female University of Texas student robbed the Farmers National Bank of Buda. She got away with $1,000 in $5 bills, but was captured later that night. No jury would convict the young girl, nicknamed the “flapper bandit” so she eventually went free. Today, Buda TX is a booming bedroom community of Austin commuters. It has attracted national attention for its annual lighthearted wiener dog races.
